I've had an iphone and Instagram less than a month, but I'm totally hooked. I love capturing little glimpses of my day in an artistic way. After printing a bunch through Postal Pix, I thought about some cool things I could do with them to display. I don't want my creations to be forever stored on the internet! Last week I showed you a DIY photobox using old paint sticks. (see it here) But today, we're making super easy Instagram Coasters!
Here's what you need and how to do it.
Supplies:
Instagrams! (you can order directly from Postal Pix - an app for the iphone - and they arrive in the mail in just a couple days!)
4 1/2" square wood pieces (I cut mine on my dad's woodshop, however you can buy various sized wood plaques at just about any craft store. You could even use plain coasters you already have...)
Mod Podge Dimensional Magic (I bought it at Michaels...)
Acrylic Gel Medium (or traditional Mod Podge)
Paint brush
The steps are so easy - you just need to be careful with the Dimensional Magic, it is super sticky!
1: Cut wood (or buy wood, or find wood, whatever. I really just wanted to put a picture of me in my work clothes using the huge electric saw)
2: Apply gel medium (or mod podge) to the back of the instagram. Make sure that you coat the entire back and that you get the corners!
3: Place on wood. I let the gel medium dry pretty well...just about 10 minutes is all it took though. Make sure the instagram is perfectly flat and wipe away any excess gel medium.
4, 5, and 6: Apply Dimensional Magic. This is where you need to take your time. Start slowly and apply from the middle of the image towards the edges. The dimensional magic will slowly settle and run together, but if you go too fast it will run off the edges. Make sure the instagram is completely covered and go just beyond the picture. It should go just to the edge of the wood without running over if you apply it slowly.
Let dry on a flat surface. I let it dry overnight, but it takes at least 3 to 4 hours to dry completely.
And tada! You're done and now you have fun little instagram coasters!
** Last little tip -- Don't shake the dimensional magic or it will make bubbles everywhere that are really tough to get rid of.
Have fun!
